Speakers: Dean Barnett, R.D. Barnett PLLC & Liberty Upton, Helsell Fetterman

Topic: Year-end Tax Planning: A Case Study in Family Limited Liability Companies

Dean Barnett of R.D. Barnett PLLC will be teaming up with Liberty Upton of Helsell Fetterman to lead the annual Keiretsu Tax Academy.  Through a case study in Family Limited Liabilities companies the participates will be exposed to estate planning, asset protection, fractionalizing interests, and gifting.  The remainder of the session will be focused on year-end income tax planning ideas and any updates to tax extender bills that may, or may not, be passed.  Should time permit, the floor will be opened to discuss any additional issues related to angel investing, i.e. small business stock capital gain exclusion, ordinary deductions for poor investments, using alternative vehicles to invest in companies, concerns about flow-through investments, etc.

 

Dean Barnett Bio

Early in Dean’s career he focused on private companies that ranged in size and complexity; including large family owned companies all the way to newly funded technology start-ups. This provided Dean with a strong foundation for understanding the tax implications of young and mature operating companies. Prior to leaving PwC, Dean managed the tax compliance and consulting for a $6 billion open ended global fund. Clients relied on him to provide specialized fund level compliance and consulting solutions. Today Dean is combining those experiences to offer a unique skill set to the venture capital firms funding the ideas of like minded entrepreneurs.

In 2003, Dean received a Masters in Professional Accountancy, with a focus in Taxation

from the University of Washington. Dean holds a Master Degree in Real Estate Finance from the New York University.  Dean also graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Finance.  He maintains his   certified public accounting license in both Washington and New York.

 

Liberty Upton Bio

Liberty Upton’s practice encompasses estate planning, probate, business succession planning, trust administration, and taxation. She helps families and individuals achieve their estate planning goals by utilizing wills, trusts, healthcare & financial durable powers of attorney, and advanced directives. Liberty also works with business owners and assists them with issues of business formation, risk management, and business succession planning.

Liberty earned her law degree from Seattle University School of Law and her Master of Laws in Taxation (LL.M.) from the University of Florida Levin College of Law.
